  • Calcites are crushed and screened white marbles which are inexpensively used to neutralize acidic or low pH waters to neutral, less corrosive effluents. Calcite occurs naturally in the form of calcium carbonate. Calcite, when it limits to its own properties, then has various built in advantages. Acidity in water is generally caused by dissolving carbon-dioxide. But, Calcite + water = Alkaline water – offsets the acidity – low pH of water.    Carbon-dioxide anyhow is present in water naturally in a minute amount. Water purification treatment like Reverse Osmosis has the ability to remove the alkalinity from the water but it cannot move the carbon-dioxide.

Acidic water when comes in contact with the calcite, slowly dissolves the calcium carbonate which eventually raises the pH level of water and thereby reducing the leaching property of copper, lead, and other metals which are found in the typical plumbing system.

Excessively high and low pHs can be detrimental for the use of water. If the pH of water is high, then it can cause rusting of the metals in water pipelines and other water using appliances by the metals like lead, iron etc., and it will also lesser the effectiveness of the chlorine used in the water for purification process which will lead to the additional chlorine requirement when the pH of the water level is high. It will also make drinking water bitter in taste. So, when calcite is properly applied, it will only correct the pH of the water to the level where it reaches the non-corrosive equilibrium. Anyhow, it does not overcorrect under the normal conditions.

Calcite neutralization of water purification system is mostly is used in residential and commercial areas. They are used to neutralize acidic or low pH water to reduce the corrosiveness and balance pH prior to iron treatment. Calcite is slow-acting for controlled pH neutralisation of low hardness water with a pH level ranging from 5.0 to 6.9.
